Powerful Strategies to Protect Your WordPress Site from Content Scrapers

By Alinga

Content marketing is a great way to drive digital traffic to your product and can increase clientele. But with these benefits, it also comes with a threat, the threat of your content being stolen. Content scraping has become a menace for bloggers, web design experts and website owners. All the hard work poured in behind creating the content can be obtained with just a few clicks. Here are some ways to protect your WordPress site from online thefts.

1) Using Webmaster Tools:

Google Webmaster tools are an effective way to find any sorts of content scraping. However, this method can be a bit complex. Contacting the Webmaster can be an effective way to identify scrapers and be prevented from them. One can always block the particular scraper by identifying their IP. Basically, you are looking for numerous links to your site. Social bookmarking and media links can be removed.

2) Using Google Alerts:

This can be an effective way for scraping prevention. It is a very simple method and does not require major techie know-how. Simply head to the Google Alerts Website, enter some of the portion from the content on your website, and choose what type of websites should be searched. (eg. Blogs, News, Sports, etc.) It is recommended to select the ‘Everything’ option. Enter your mail id, so that Google can contact you with results that have similar content.

3) Using Copyscape:

Copyscape is the most suited option for websites that post frequently. There is a premium version that you have to buy. However, it is worth all the money. You simply have to post the URL of your website. Copyscape will surf through all places, where your content has been reposted.

4) Creating a lot of links to other posts on your site:

This is a way which enhances your SEO and is also a good defense against Content Scrapers. While doing the Gold Coast Web Design, create a lot of links of other content on your site in a particular post. When your content is being stolen, it will still retain those links. This way, the scrapers can be identified. Also, even if your content is being stolen, you can still revert some traffic to your website. Also, you can increase your WordPress Website Speed.

5) Using Registration, Login and CAPTCHAS:

By making it compulsory to register and login, you only permit trusted users to access the content. It prevents bots that do not support computer imaging. A small drawback of this method is that your content will not be listed in search engines. Captchas are Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. They can be both, annoying and useful. Many captchas plugins are available for WordPress sites.

6) Using Footers:

You can put footers in all your posts and retain credit of your content even after being stolen. Yoast has a built in Footer Plugin.

7) Using Google Search Authorship:

If you post a lot, you should get a Google Search Authorship. This will help in proving you as the original creator of the particular content. If the content scraper steals your content, Google will note it and ensure that your domain is rated above the scraped content.

8) Filing a DMCA complaint:

Filing a DMCA complaint is the ultimate and most effective way to fend off content scrapers. By filing a DMCA complaint with Google, it will be ensured that the scraped content is taken down. Tell Google what was stolen, by whom it was stolen and give your contact details. This becomes a legal matter and thus all proceedings should be done carefully. At the end, the scraped content is legally taken down from the site that was stealing.

Thus, with the above mentioned Web Design Gold Coast tweaks, you can protect your WordPress site from Content Scrapers and can Contact Alinga if you need any help!
