The golden rules of eCommerce

The world of ecommerce is growing at a rapid pace that has never been seen before. It is fast becoming the preferred option for consumers to makes purchases as the availability of products is always increasing. It is also one of the most convenient options for consumers, and can be very cost effective for businesses as it removes the need for physical premises.

But not every ecommerce store is created equal. There are many different aspects to consider when creating and designing an online store to sell your products, and the effective utilisation of these can make the difference between success and failure.

So keep in mind the golden rules below when you’re designing and launching your ecommerce store.

Fundamentals of an ecommerce store

  1. User experience. No matter what you might be selling or whether you are giving consumers the best price available, if they become frustrated while using your site you aren�t going to be able to convert them into paying customers. Make sure that your site is easy to navigate and customers can find the information that they�re looking for. 
  2. Shopping cart. The design of your shopping cart should be consistent with the rest of your site, and be easy for your customers to find. It should update in real time as the customers add items to the cart, and should be kept relatively simple so that it doesn�t turn customers off the buying process. 
  3. Images and pictures. Customers are much more likely to purchase from your ecommerce store if you have a series of high quality images of the product that you�re selling. These need to provide them with a number of angles of the product, and should include pictures that demonstrate the key features.
  4. Product descriptions. Just as important as images and pictures of the products is the need for detailed product descriptions. Customers aren�t able to simply talk to a sales assistant in a store, so it is vital that you provide them with a high level of information on the page so that they can easily make their buying decisions. 
  5. Support. Customers also need to be able to easily access support from your store using a variety of methods, including email and phone support. This way they can still have the sort of interaction they might have in a physical store, which is sometimes a barrier for new customers who aren�t familiar with internet shopping.
